How to Rekey a Door Lock Yourself

When you want to switch the key to a lock yourself, you'll need to purchase a key change kit that is specific to the brand of knob, lever, or bolt. These kits provide you with between three and six keys that are all cut identically. If the lock requires a different key than the one on the front door knob, you can change it if they are of the same brand. To rekey the lock, first remove it from the door and replace it at the same time as you do with the door knob.

Then, replace the lower pins (pins) with others that match the cuts of another key. In essence, you are altering the points of the lock to match the cuts on the new key. Rekeying a door lock is not a difficult task, but it is important to make sure that you have all of the necessary tools and supplies before beginning. You will need a key change kit, which includes all of the necessary pins and springs for rekeying your lock.

Additionally, you will need a screwdriver and some lubricant to ensure that everything works smoothly. Once you have all of your supplies ready, begin by removing the screws from the back of your lock. Then, remove the cylinder from the door and place it on a flat surface. Next, use your screwdriver to remove the retaining clip from inside of the cylinder.

This will allow you to access the pins inside of your lock. Now that you have access to your pins, use your key change kit to replace them with new ones that match your new key. Make sure that each pin is in its correct position before replacing them in your lock. Once all of your pins are in place, reassemble your lock and test it out with your new key. Rekeying a door lock is not an overly complicated process, but it is important to make sure that you have all of the necessary tools and supplies before beginning. If done correctly, rekeying your door lock can be a great way to keep your home secure without having to purchase an entirely new lock.
